Curriculum

Dr. Formisano graduated with honors in 2007 and completed his surgical residency program in 2014 at the University “Federico II” of Naples. He early embraced minimally invasive surgery in his surgical training and, since 2009, he was a resident at the Department of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric surgery, directed by Dr. Luigi Angrisani (San Giovanni Bosco Hospital – Naples – Italy). His first robotic experience was in 2013 as resident at the Department of General and Oncologic Surgery (SS Antonio and Biagio Hospital – Alessandria – Italy), headed by Dr. Giuseppe Spinoglio, taking part to one of the largest robotic surgery programs in Europe. Field of interests ranged from upper gastrointestinal surgery to colorectal, fluorescence imaging system (both laparoscopic and robotic) and Single-Site™ platform, mostly focused on oncologic surgery. He completed his residency defending a thesis on “Robotic right colectomy with complete mesocolic excision” and then continued his experience in Alessandria as clinical research fellow working on the project “Sentinel lymph node identification in colon cancer with robotic near infrared (NIR) fluorescent imaging system”. G. Formisano moved as attending surgeon to the Department of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery (headed by Dr. Paolo Pietro Bianchi – Misericordia Hospital – Grosseto – Italy) since 2015, facing routinely robotic surgery in clinical practice and surgical oncology. He has been involved in structured step-wise training program in robotic colorectal surgery, having performed to date more than 250 robotic surgical procedures as operating surgeon (colorectal surgery and advanced abdominal wall repairs) and having assisted in more than 500 interventions. He has been a faculty member of the International School of Robotic Surgery (Grosseto – Italy), mainly taking care of the wet lab activities, lectures and live surgery.

He is actually attending surgeon at the Department of General Surgery of ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo (University of Milan, Milan), headed by Prof. Paolo Pietro Bianchi

He is author and co-author of several peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, one textbook on Robotic Surgery (edited by Dr. Spinoglio) and one textbook on Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery (edited by Dr. Luigi Angrisani).
